Some people suffer from a dental abscess, a condition that begins with a tooth infection. Dental Abscess happens when a tooth infection progress, and usually, it will scatter through the gums, tongue, and throat. It also involves a collection of pus in the gums wherein inflammation is seen. Sometimes, it can go beyond the mouth, such as in the jaw and face. The infection occurs in people who don’t have proper oral hygiene.
Most of the times, the pus presented in the affected area can drain on its own. However, there are times when it doesn’t subside, then it will require to be removed surgically by a dentist.
A dental abscess is not necessary to involve pain unless tissues in the affected area are inflamed. The pain can be mild to severe and sometimes include throbbing pains.
What are the signs?
If you suspect a dental abscess, you should contact your dentist immediately, so it will not progress further. Aside from pain, other symptoms are swelling and redness on your mouth or your lower cheeks.
However, when a dental abscess is severe, you can also experience chilling, fever, excessive sweating, nausea, and vomiting. Most of the time, the condition worsens when the infection is significantly inflamed and keep blocking the airway. Eventually, you might experience difficulty in breathing.
What should you do?
You can still prevent it from happening by giving remedy to the cause of a dental abscess which is an infected tooth. You should see a dentist if you have an infected tooth so that you will have the proper treatment.
There are also some habits you need to avoid and some that need improvement. You should try to eliminate cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking as both are contributing in damaging your teeth and gums. Then try to improve your oral hygiene by brushing your teeth after meals and snacks, you can also gargle with an antiseptic mouthwash if you are on the go, and make sure you floss your teeth once in a while. Also, make sure to have a healthy diet and eat foods that are rich in calcium.
