Routine dental cleanings are important to preserving healthy oral hygiene and are recommended once every six months. At our Schenectady family and cosmetic dental practice, our hygienists are trained to provide superb professional cleanings for our patients. These cleanings are intended to remove mineralized plaque, which may develop even with careful brushing and flossing, particularly in those hard-to-reach areas.
How it's done
A dental cleaning typically lasts anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour. Most dental cleanings are performed by one of our well-trained hygienists, and Dr. Thomas J. Merten will come in for a quick exam at the conclusion of your cleaning.
The first step to an efficient dental cleaning is scaling the teeth, whereby one of our highly trained hygienists will remove the plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces by an appropriate method. We will also clean the pockets of the gums to remove any additional plaque buildup. The second step is polishing to remove any final plaque and buff the teeth. Polishers generally have several different sized heads to clean those hard-to-reach places.
Again, we emphasize that it is highly recommended by Dr. Thomas J. Merten, his team, and every dental association in the country that you should have your teeth professionally cleaned every six months.
