Dental veneers help to improve the appearance and color of your smile. These thin, custom-made shells are made of a natural tooth-colored material and cover the front surface of your tooth. Consider dental veneers as an alternative to perfecting the color of your teeth that have been worn down or stained, or for improving the shape and size of the tooth.
Types of veneers
We use the two standard types of veneers at our Schenectady dental practice: porcelain or composite resin. Porcelain veneers are more durable to resist stains better, and they are made with materials that offer a very natural tooth shade. Unlike porcelain veneers, an alternative composite resin veneer is not made in a laboratory but directly applied to the tooth. Composite resin typically has a shorter lifespan are is more prone to chipping. However, they are less expensive.
When should you consider dental veneers?
You should talk to Dr. Thomas J. Merten, your Schenectady, NY dentist about dental veneers if:
Your teeth are stained or discolored
Your teeth are crooked
Your teeth have unpleasing spaces
Your teeth are broken, chipped or misshapen
How it’s done
Typically, porcelain veneers require two separate visits to Dr. Thomas J. Merten’s office. At the first visit, your teeth are prepared to be fitted for your veneer, which will involve trimming a portion of the tooth, so the veneer can be bonded on top. Then an impression of your tooth will be taken to assist a laboratory in preparing the veneer to your exact tooth’s specifications. At the end of this visit, you will receive a temporary veneer to protect your tooth while the permanent veneer is being prepared at the laboratory.
Upon your second visit, the temporary veneer will be removed, and the new veneer from the laboratory will be properly fitted. In order to avoid unnecessary adjustments after your porcelain veneers are bonded to your teeth, plan for several adjustments during your fitting. We will bond the veneer to your tooth only after you and our dental team are completely satisfied with the look and feel of the veneer.
